Best season to visit Bolivia: Weather, Festivals & Travel Tips

What you plan to visit—or what you are looking for—will be affected by the season, the month, and the weather during your stay in Bolivia.

This country has a wide variety of climates. It is usually divided into three regions: the Altiplano, the valleys, and the lowlands. You might think the temperature always increases from the Altiplano to the lowlands, but in reality, you can experience very different temperatures in each of them.

So, when is the best moment to visit Bolivia? Let’s dive in!

Best Time to Visit Bolivia

From April to October, Bolivia experiences its driest season. This is the perfect time to:

  • Take panoramic photos in Uyuni.
  • Visit the Bolivian Amazon.
  • Ride along the famous Death Road.
  • Climb breathtaking mountains.

Trekking & Outdoor Adventures

The Choro Trail

One I’d recommend, if you have the time, is the Choro Trail. It takes about three days, but it’s worth it for the breathtaking views. The difficulty is relatively low, and you have the option to hire a porter to help with your luggage, making the walk lighter.

Valle de las Ánimas (Soul Valley)

Another beautiful option is the Valle de las Ánimas, very close to La Paz. The hike takes only 2–3 hours, is easy to do, and ends at a spectacular viewpoint.

Uyuni in the Dry Season

You’ve probably heard about the famous mirror effect in Uyuni. Actually, this is not the best season for that—but you can still visit Incahuasi Island, which is sometimes closed during the rainy season.

If you’re lucky, you may even see small “water eyes,” where you can catch glimpses of the mirror effect. Anyway, the vast white desert will leave you speechless—it feels like walking on another planet.

Exploring the Bolivian Amazon

Imagine waking up to the sound of the jungle, with toucans overhead, monkeys jumping between the trees, or even hearing a jaguar in the distance.

This is the best season to enjoy the Amazon. It is fresher during the dry months, so you can walk more comfortably and spot wildlife more easily.

Adventure Sports: Death Road & Mountain Climbs

For adventure and adrenaline lovers, this is also the safest season for cycling the Death Road, since it’s usually dry and less slippery.

And when it comes to mountains like Huayna Potosí or Illimani, the temperatures may be colder, but with less snowfall, your chances of slipping are lower than in other seasons.
